Crystal wakes up every day certain that she is absolutely perfect in every way, and her mission is to remind everyone how sweet and wonderful she is. She greets you with her "I just won the doggie-lottery expression" and if that fails to impress she follows it up with an adorable doggie grin. Yep, Crystal is a grinner. Despite her innate love-ability, Crystal has shown protective tendencies on at least a few occasions when at home. While she is perfectly happy to greet popcorn-selling boyscouts at the door with a wagging behind, she is much less impressed if unknown grown men are wandering around her house without an invite. Since her "guard dog" came out last Thanksgiving, we give more thorough introductions when "strangers" come visiting for the holidays.
Crystal comes from a cross between our Lil' Miss and Slash V Char, but I cannot say that she takes strongly after her sire or dam (or her grandparents). You can pick apart aspects that remind you of either parent, but in truth she is a well mixed cocktail of both. Even in appearance, she blended both lines beautifully. She is lighter boned with a more feminine head than Lil' Miss, but from a quick profile glance of her body you could easily mistake her for a younger version of her dam. She is very even-tempered much like her sire, but she is a little more attention-seeking than Char. Crystal not only gets along well with other dogs, but she has a unique ability to alter her behavior to calm aggressive dogs and coax nervous dogs into playing. On multiple occasions, I have seen her bringing out the best in other dogs.
Crystal was intended to be Angela's agility/performance dog, but a freak (and still unclear) accident during a January 2013 snow storms resulted in a bad break in her front leg. While she seems to think her leg is now fit for wild runs, scaling walls, and diving off decks, we are less convinced that she should be participating in major performance events. She has been placed on house-companion duty in Arkansas.

Genetic Testing Results (tests conducted by Pawprint Genetics*):
Crystal tested Normal/Normal. i.e. not a carrier, for the following mutations MDR1 (Ivermectin Sensitivity), Collie Eye Anomaly, Cone Degeneration, Canine Multifocal Retinopathy 1, Degenerative Myelopathy, HSF-4 Hereditary Cataracts, Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis 6, and Progressive rod-cone degeneration.
Crystal tested Normal/Mutant; i.e. a carrier, for Hyperuricosuria. This means that she and any pups she produces when crossed with a Normal/Normal male will not be predisposed to bladder stones. However, if she is ever bred to a male that carries one or more copies of the mutant allele, some puppies may be predisposed to bladder stones.
*Our focus has always been and will continue to be temperament and instinct consistent with the old working Aussies. However, we do our best to also maintain healthy lines. We try to sensibly use current technology to help in this goal. After all, healthy dogs are needed for farm work so we are starting to utilize some of the genetic testing options available. I am not completely confident on prioritization and interpretation of the genetic testing , but Pawprint Genetics did answer some of my questions in a reasonably convincing manner. Here is their feedback to me if it helps: Link to Feedback.
