Gypsy is from a cross between two Hall of Fame (HOF) Aussies- Pincie Creek Osceola and Free Spirit of Pincie Creek. Those of you who study Aussie bloodlines may recognize that as a cross that has spawned a number of working trial champions. In fact, I think 5 out of 7 Gypsy's littermates earned their WTCH (working trial champion). Gypsy decided she was Angela's dog the first day they met and has remained her constant companion ever since. And she finds all sorts of ways to make herself useful. For example, she pulled me, my sister, and my dad to the other side of the river when our air mattress had an unfortunate downfall. Now in her old age, she is Angela's self-designated alarm clock (regardless of whether I wanted to wake up at 5:00 am or not.)
For most of her life, Gypsy has firmly believed that everyone in the world is her buddy so it might be surprising to know that she was reserved around strangers as a youngster. It wasn't until she was about 2.5 years that she discovered she got more back rubs if she was sweet and lovable to everyone she met. On the other hand, I can never remember Gypsy meeting a dog that she didn't immediately believe was her friend. She has lived with a variety of cats without any problems, although my “the cat is always the boss” rule for Gypsy has gotten us both into a trouble a couple of time when we encountered mean “attack” kitties. As a general rule, Gypsy obeys commands well and is very well mannered in the house. She is also a very easy traveler (an important thing for a dog who has to take a trip to Arkansas every time I get homesick).
She has the misfortune of having to be a city dog and spend most of her life in Angela's apartments, but we visited the university sheep farm once or twice a week for many years until it finally shut-down. Gypsy is a bit gentler on the livestock than Monty, which I preferred since I often used “borrowed” sheep, but she has always gotten her point across when she chooses. Until she was six years old, she was by far the fastest dog I had ever tried to train. She just moved- zoom! (She did finally slow down to 'normal' speed after six.) Since I had difficulty having time and a contact for professional herding training, Gypsy and I played at agility for awhile. She had a good deal of talent, and we earned our first two legs to an UKC AGI agility title at the first (and only) trial we ever attended! Unfortunately, our trainer had to stop training and then ended up leaving the country so we never continued that journey. Now I think she deserves to stay the queen of the manor so she only is taken out for “agility playtime” and not actually entered in any trials. Now that I know more about agility, I realize that Gypsy was a very target driven dog making her much easier for a novice trainer because she was difficult to throw off track once I had her headed in the proper direction.
We kept a male, Max, out of Gypsy for our breeding program. He is out of Char, and we couldn't be happier with the first puppies from him. They are sharp as tacks with strong working instinct. Gypsy has impressive bloodlines, has been a wonderful companion, and will strongly influence our future breeding program through Max. Gypsy was Angela's girl until the end.
