Joe is from a small farm in North Carolina close to the shore. When we went looking for Joe, we needed a male that was structurally sound, possessed a keen interest in working livestock, but did not become overzealous. We had struggled with some dogs that would try to break out of the penned area to aggravate the pregnant does. We didn't want to risk any hurt does or kids due to an overzealous dog. We wanted a dog that could be gentle on the smaller livestock like goats, but still aggressive with the larger, meaner cows and knew to leave the stock alone when we weren't asking for him to help us move them. Joe was started on goats when we first met him, and we were very impressed with him and Mr. Wyatt's style of dogs in general. Joe has matched everything were looking for in a male so far. In addition to his great temperament, Joe has a gorgeous conformation. He is very square, has a very strong topline, and moves out well. We would like to thank Bayfield Farms for breeding such a fine dog and having his training started so well.
Joe is politely reserved around strangers as described in the ASCA breed standard. His offspring share this characteristic, although it often does not become noticeable until they mature past puberty. He is bonded very closely to our family, and again his pups also are very much a one person or one family type of dogs. The most noteworthy point about Joe is that he has an incredible “want to please” attitude that he passes on to his progeny. Joe is the only dog that we own that will try to figure out what my Dad is asking for when Dad starts yelling like a bull in a china closet. (I have a great Dad, he just isn't the best at training or working with dogs sometimes.)
It should be noted that Joe is much stronger in the open or large pens than doing work in tight locations and small pens. He is good at gathering and bringing in the cows in the open pasture, he does a fine job about working them in the round pen and keeping the family safe from ornery kicks, but he really prefers not to be in the tight alleys going up to the head chute or trailer. It could simply be that Joe is a big boy. He has over 20 pounds on most of our other dogs and when you are built like a football player its hard to dodge in crowded spots. We have been impressed with the pups we have kept back out of Joe or have gotten feedback on. They all have a “want to please” personality but tend to be reserved around strangers. They tend to have more guardian instinct on home turf compared to our other lines, but they are still sociable in public when they are with their own people. All the pups that have been exposed to stock have had a strong working instinct.
